Stomach Pumps

The Stomach pump was first invented by John Read the son of a Kentish Farmer who developed the idea from a garden syringe (see John Read below)

It was popularised by Sir Astley Cooper (Life Vol 2 p 301ff – downloadable – see below) (probably around 1823)

a Bristol Surgeon, Augustin Pritchard in Some Incidents in general Practice (This is from memory) described the rum cases people who went down to the Bristol docks armed with a gimlet and a straw. They sat beside a cask of rum and invariablybecame insensible. They were cdonveyed to the Infirmary and the only treatment was a long goose feather lept in thedrawer of the Casualyu Room table. If this failed to stimulate the rear of the throat the patient perished. - not sure of date but Bristol may have as usual been behind the times.
